“Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mk 10:17b) What is eternal, and what is not eternal? What we see with our eyes is not eternal? What we touch with our hands and taste with our tongues is not eternal. What we smell is not eternal. Some of what we hear is eternal if we hear the Word of God. Who is eternal? God is eternal, and whoever hears the Word of God. “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life.” (Jn 5:24) “… blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” (Lk 11:28) “…the word of God is living and effective…” (Heb 4:12) The Incarnate Word descended and died on the Cross, but the Eternal Word rose from the dead and ascended into heaven and lives forever. The Incarnation made it possible for mortal souls to live in eternity with God. Jesus told His disciples: “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.” (Lk 12:4-5) In this life, you choose either to give your soul to God or Satan. Every choice you make shapes your soul and determines whether you choose good or evil. You cannot earn or buy your way to heaven. You choose or reject heaven by listening to or ignoring God.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,
as on the day of Massah in the desert.
There your ancestors tested me;
they tried me though they had seen my works.
Forty years I loathed that generation;
I said: “This people’s heart goes astray;
they do not know my ways.”
Therefore I swore in my anger:
“They shall never enter my rest.” (Ps 95:7c-11)
