Welcome to St. Peter Catholic Church Sacramental Preparation Program
Currently our program focuses on the preparation of children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. All preparation classes are based on Whole Family Catechesis with parents being the primary teachers of their children and support from our parish catechists to help clarify concepts, teachings and points through regularly scheduled meetings where parents can come and have time to ask questions and bring their children as well for clarification. This is a change from the “Sacramental Prep Class” model where children were dropped off for a one hour class and then picked up at the end.
All families are expected to work through the Student Text and Activity Books for content that will help to instill and reinforce the Faith. There are two sets of books to work through for each program. Reconciliation and First Communion use the Faith and Life Series Level 1 – Our Heavenly Father & Level 2 – Jesus Our Life. For Confirmation families are expected to work through the Faith and Life Series Level 5 – I Believe and Level 7 – The Life of Grace. There are Spanish Textbooks available for each of these as well.
Teaching the basics of the Faith in cooperation with attending Mass regularly and participating in the regular reception of the Sacraments will help to build a deeper understanding of the Faith and a deeper relationship with God.
First Communion Preparation
Children who are looking to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion must be 6 years of age when beginning the preparation process. Our preparation program is a two year process with students receiving their First Holy Communion in the Spring of their Level 2 year. Please make a hyperlink for (A Blueprint for Receiving First Holy Communion).
For children who are looking to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, it is also a two year process. The Bishop confers Confirmation every two years on the even year in our parish (ie 2020, 2022, 2024) usually in the Spring. Exact dates for the reception of the sacrament are always determined by the Bishop. Please make a hyperlink for (A Blueprint for Receiving Confirmation).
Registration for Confirmation is always the Fall of the even year and then closed until the Fall of the next even year (For example: Fall of 2020 was registration for Confirmation in Spring or Summer of 2022, registration in the Fall of 2022 will be for the reception of the Sacrament Confirmation in the Spring or Summer of 2024). All Candidates must be in 5th -11th grades at the time of registration in order to register for the Sacrament.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) Program
If your child is 7 years old (or will be at the time of reception of the sacraments) or older and has not been baptized, they will need to go through a separate process called RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children).
In this program children will be prepared to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion as well as the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Hyperlink to Canon 99-2 https://www.vatican.va/archive/cod-iuris-canonici/eng/documents/cic_lib1-cann96-123_en.html
Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion will be received at the Easter Vigil Mass and First Reconciliation will be received about a month later. There is an expectation that children will attend a regularly scheduled Preparation Class at the parish and it will also be the expectation that families will regularly attend Sunday Mass, or Saturday Vigil Mass, weekly together.
